Professor Slughorn

Today I made Professor Slughorn using the book's description. In the books, Slughorn is bald and has a walrus-like mustache. I honestly don't know what the heck this is, but for whatever reason the whole creative team on the Half-Blood Prince film was okay with it. Shrug.

What I learned from this experience: 1. latex bald caps are the worst. 2. Not sure if I used too much yellow in the bald cap, or if the "skin color" of the baldcap was harder to cover up than originally thought. Either way, never buy that type of bald cap again.

Bellatrix Lestrange

Before

I hate doing beauty makeup, so I decided to force myself to do a beauty makeup for the practice. If I had to do beauty, though, I wanted to make it worth my while, so I decided to go with Bellatrix before she was sent to Azkaban and was described in Order of the Phoenix as being rather beautiful even though she's a horrible person. I drew inspiration from the show "Once Upon a Time" and their many, many villainous beauty makeups--in particular, the Evil Queen from Snow White.

Then we decided to see what she looked like after her 13.5 years in Azkaban.

Bellatrix is one of many ingenious characters that Rowling's brilliant mind spawned, and also one of my personal least favorite characters in the series. I mean, she's incredible as a villain and I love her for her villainy, but I despise her in relation to all the other characters because she's so insane, so malicious, and such a sociopath. She's brilliant, but scary.

It was an interesting experience, bringing her to life this afternoon and thinking about her life before and after Azkaban. I love her, but I hate her.

This makeup was a lot of fun to do.

The description in Prisoner of Azkaban of Sirius Black in the Shrieking Shack describes him as being basically a walking skeleton with gnarly elbow-length hair and waxy skin. Rowling didn't mention anything about facial hair, but I imagine after 12 years in Azkaban he'd have some sort of facial hair to go with that awesome hairdo. I decided to make a patchy beard because stress takes a toll on facial hair growing abilities.

The beard was made using crepe hair and Spirit Gum--a tedious process that I don't recommend but it's good stuff to know. Just use a lace beard, they're so much simpler.

I looked up pictures of anorexic men and Holocaust survivors after liberation as reference for the skull-like appearance described in the book.

It was a lot of fun working with the model who volunteered for the role; he was perfect as Sirius Black. Thanks for volunteering!

First off I would like to say that I know Cedric is supposed to be brunette. I didn't want to dye my model's hair with more permanent hair dye since I couldn't find brown spray-in dye and we didn't have a male wig at the school that would work. I'm sorry, internet. I tried.

Besides that, here's the rough outline of what I did:

1. Paled out his face since Cedric was probably in some level of shock after facing the dragon, and added some green tones to his face.

2. Added scratches to his face and hands.

3. Third degree burn. I love making burns (fake ones, of course).

Fleur Delacour after the Lake Challenge

My next Triwizard champion was Fleur Delacour after the lake challenge. 

The challenge was to rescue a loved one from the lake on Hogwarts grounds. Previous to this challenge, the only creature we knew who lived in the lake was the giant squid, but it turns out he has a lot of lake mates such as mermaids (which look nothing like Disney's mermaids), and these water demons called Grindylows.

Basically Grindylows are ugly little things that live in seaweed and have long fingers that they like to attack humans with, however their fingers happen to be incredibly brittle so while their grip is very strong, it can easily be broken (at least, that's what Rowling tells me in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and a passage from Prisoner of Azkaban--when Harry and Lupin are having tea in Lupin's office).

Unfortunately for Fleur, the Grindylows got the best of her and she was unable to retrieve her sister from the bottom of the lake.

For this makeup I did a basic female corrective to fix any skin "imperfections" (color, acne, etc.), then added mascara and wet the tar out of it so that it would leak down my model's face. Unfortunately, my mascara is running low so I had to improvise and use black cream makeup to get it to run.

I added Grindylow scratches on her arms and legs, and wet her hair.

If my model was going on stage or on camera for an extended period of time, I would have used coconut oil in her hair so that we wouldn't have to keep wetting her hair and so that she wouldn't drip all over the stage/set. Since I was only doing the makeup and immediately taking a picture of it, I just wet my model's hair so that she wouldn't have to walk around with copious amounts of coconut oil in her hair all day, and then have to struggle with washing it all out later.

The next makeup you'll see is the last Triwizard champion I intend on doing, and you already know this champion will be coming from the dragon challenge. Stay tuned for that.

Harry Potter After the Maze and Graveyard

For advanced makeup, we get to come up with our own projects, so I've decided to bring some of the Harry Potter characters to life over the course of the semester.

The first character up: Harry Potter, of course.

But not just Harry Potter on an average school day because that would be too easy and kind of boring. Naa, Harry Potter after the maze Triwizard challenge and the graveyard scene when he comes back with Cedric after seeing the Dark Lord rise again! Yeah!

Those of you who haven't read the books (a. I pity you, and b. you really should read the books because they're just so much better than the movies, especially from 3 on), in the maze challenge, Harry encounters a giant spider which bites his leg and limits his mobility. He has a lot of weird stuff happen to him in that maze; I'll let you read it because Rowling does it so much better than any poor explanation I could muster.

and then a certain terrible person (whom shall remain nameless so that you can go and enjoy the books more) comes out and helps resurrect the Dark Lord using Harry's blood.

Homemade fake blood for days!

I only had a teeny bit of fake blood in my kit, so I looked up some homemade recipes. You can find all sorts of fake blood recipes online (the world wide web is a wonderful place, you guys. You can literally learn any and everything now if you know where to go--cough cough Youtube).
